About
Head of the Rapids Group Center is a secluded retreat within Minnesota's largest state park. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938-1939, this historic facility offers 10 rustic cabins without electricity or heat, sleeping 9-11 people each. Support buildings including staff quarters, infirmary, office, and cook's quarters do have electricity. Each village has its own bathroom and shower building, with A-Village being fully accessible.
The dining hall seats 80 and features a fireplace, restroom, and fully equipped commercial kitchen with stove, ovens, walk-in cooler, freezer, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, and coffee maker for 125. Utensils, plates, and cups for 125 are provided. Recreation amenities include a private ball field, sand volleyball court, swimming beach, three fire rings, picnic tables, a large grill, and a craft building with electricity and workbenches.
The center operates seasonally from mid-May through late September. Reservations must be made by calling the park directly up to one year in advance. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout at 1 p.m., with staff inspection required before departure. Only service animals are permitted; sleeping tents and RVs (except with medical approval) are not allowed.
Directions
From Hinckley, Minnesota, take State Highway 48 east for approximately 15 miles to St. Croix State Park. Follow park signs to the Head of the Rapids Group Center.
