Looking West from Dry Wolf Cabin

Dry Wolf Cabin

Closed — The cabin is open year-round and available for reservations through Recreation.gov. Winter access requires four-wheel-drive vehicles due to snow on the gravel road.

About

Dry Wolf Cabin is located about 20 miles southwest of Stanford, Montana, in the Little Belt Mountains of Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The rustic one-room cabin sits along Dry Wolf Creek at 5,600 feet elevation, nestled beneath Gibson Peak and Butcherknife Mountain. The cabin sleeps five people and features a propane cook stove, propane lights, and a wood stove for heat. Dishes, pots, pans, and utensils are provided, and firewood is located in the storage shed. Dry Wolf Creek offers brook and rainbow trout fishing opportunities. Horseback riding and hiking trails originate within a few miles of the cabin, and the area includes trails for mountain bikers and off-road vehicle riders. Cross-country skiing is popular during winter months. The cabin is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no water or electricity provided. Guests must bring all drinking water and supplies. A vault toilet is located outside year-round. When snow arrives, the graveled county road requires four-wheel-drive access.

Directions

From Stanford, Montana, go a mile northwest on US 87, then turn left on County Road 251 (Dry Wolf Road). Continue for 15 miles and look for a sign to Dry Wolf Station. Turn left onto short parking spur of the cabin site.
