About

Hat Rock State Park sits on the south shore of Lake Wallula behind McNary Dam on the Columbia River, nine miles east of Umatilla off U.S. Highway 730. The park's namesake Hat Rock is a distinctive basalt formation carved by ancient glacial floods over ten thousand years ago and was the first landmark noted by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on their journey down the Columbia River in 1805. The park serves as a day-use recreation area with well-maintained grounds suitable for family gatherings and group events. A fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout attracts anglers, while the boat launch provides access to Lake Wallula for water sports and Columbia River fishing. Additional amenities include group picnic shelters, a sand volleyball court, and open grassy areas. The park offers four reservable group day-use areas that can accommodate up to 100 people each. This desert oasis along the Columbia River provides opportunities for picnicking, fishing, boating, and exploring the area's geological and historical significance. While the park does not offer overnight camping, it serves as a pleasant stop for those traveling through the region or seeking a day of outdoor recreation near Hermiston.
