About
Coalmine Hill Campground sits atop Coalmine Hill along the paved Blue Mountain Scenic Byway (Western Route) in Oregon's Umatilla National Forest. The campground features six sites: one larger site near the entrance and five sites arranged along the tree edges of a spacious parking area. A single vault toilet and information board are the only facilities. There is no potable water, hookups, or trash service. The campground serves as a trailhead for the Bald Mountain, Hells Half Acre, and Willow Creek trails, which combine into a 7.5-mile loop suitable for hikers and equestrians. Gibson Cave, a shallow overhanging rock shelter with interpretive displays describing its history, is accessible via the Bald Mountain Trail about 1.25 miles from the parking lot. Continuing up the trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the drainages between Coalmine Hill and Little Bald Mountain. Penland Lake, offering fishing and non-motorized boating, lies about five miles southwest via the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway and Forest Roads 21 and 2103. The campground doubles as a snow park during winter months when snow closes access.
