Gunter Hill Campground offers a serene retreat on the backwaters of the Alabama River, just west of Montgomery. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this year-round campground features 142 sites nestled in a forest of hickory and pine along Catoma Creek. Sites 1-75 have been recently renovated with concrete pads and full hookups including sewer, while all sites offer electric hookups. Each site includes a picnic table, fire pit, and outdoor grill, with generous spacing between sites providing a natural, wooded atmosphere. The campground's location on the Alabama River backwaters makes it a prime destination for anglers seeking crappie, bass, and catfish. A boat ramp provides easy river access for boating and fishing activities. For hunters, the nearby Lowndes Wildlife Management Area spans 12,500 acres and offers opportunities for whitetail deer, wild turkey, hogs, and various small game and waterfowl. The region's mild climate supports comfortable year-round camping. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, laundry facilities, and a dump station. Additional recreation options include a basketball court, playground, and picnic shelter available for group functions. The campground is conveniently located about 10 miles from downtown Montgomery yet maintains a peaceful, natural setting surrounded by trees and water.

Directions

From I-65, take exit 167 onto US-80 west. Continue for 9 miles, then turn right on County Road 7 and follow signs into the campground.
