About
Gunter Hill Campground offers a peaceful retreat on the backwaters of the Alabama River, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located about 10 miles from downtown Montgomery, the campground sits along Catoma Creek in a mixed forest of hickory and pine trees. The mild Alabama climate allows for comfortable year-round camping. The 142 sites are divided between two loops. The newer Catoma loop (sites 1-75) features recently renovated concrete pads with full hookups including electric and sewer, smooth paved roads, and pull-through spaces suitable for large RVs. The Antioch loop offers standard electric sites at a slightly lower nightly rate. Each site includes a picnic table, fire pit, and outdoor grill with generous spacing between neighbors. Fishing is a primary draw, with excellent opportunities for crappie, bass, and catfish in the surrounding waterways. A boat ramp provides easy river access. The nearby Lowndes Wildlife Management Area covers 12,500 acres and offers hunting for whitetail deer, wild turkey, hogs, and waterfowl. On-site recreation includes a basketball court and playground for families.
