About

Located just off the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway in southwest Montana, Grasshopper Campground is nestled among Lodgepole pines at 6,946 feet elevation on the Dillon Ranger District of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The campground features 20 individual first-come, first-served sites and one reservable group site that can accommodate two to three trailers. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water provided throughout the campground. Note that drinking water is only available through mid-September. The campground accommodates trailers up to 30 feet and offers no hookups or cell phone coverage. A food storage order is in place requiring all food and attractants to be stored when unattended, and bear-resistant bins are available. There is no garbage service, so visitors must pack out all trash. From Grasshopper Campground, visitors have easy access to numerous recreational activities including ATV/UTV trails, hiking, fishing, and photography. Crystal Park, located just 5.3 miles north, offers a unique rockhounding experience where visitors can dig for quartz crystals on 30 acres of public land. After a day of recreating, the natural hot springs at Elkhorn Hot Springs Resort provide a relaxing retreat. The Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway itself features interpretive sites including Coolidge Ghost Town and Grand Vista Overview. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with deer, elk, moose, and occasional black bears in the area.

Directions

From Dillon, travel 3 miles south on I-15 and take exit 59 to MT HWY 278. On 278 travel west for 22 miles to the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway turnoff. Proceed north approximately 13 miles and Grasshopper Campground will be on your left. From Butte, travel approximately 20 miles south on I-15 and take exit 102 to MT HWY 43. On 43 travel east for 12 miles to Wise River, MT. From Wise River, turn south onto the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway (RD 73) and proceed approximately 32 miles and the campground will be on your right.
