About

Lupine Shelter is a day-use picnic facility located at 7,600 feet elevation in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. Built in the early 1990s as a replica of a Civilian Conservation Corps-style building, the shelter sits in a grassy meadow surrounded by mature pine forest along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway. The shelter features a beautiful large rock fireplace, numerous windows, and two tables with chairs inside. Additional picnic tables are available outside. Accessible vault toilets are provided, but no drinking water or trash service is available. Visitors must pack out all trash. The facility is most heavily visited during winter when it serves as a warming hut for snowmobilers, though it also accommodates cross-country skiers and snowshoers exploring the snow-covered meadow. During spring and summer, vivid wildflowers color the meadow, and the area provides access to hiking and mountain biking trails. A variety of birds and wildlife inhabit the surrounding forest. No overnight camping is permitted at this day-use facility, though campgrounds are available nearby on the Pioneer Scenic Byway.
