Special Weather Statement issued April 10 at 3:26PM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK
A system moving across the Gulf will send bands of precipitation sweeping into the panhandle beginning late Sunday afternoon for most of SE AK, and early Sunday morning for Yakutat. Yakutat is expected to see some snow mixing in early Sunday morning, before transitioning to rain during the daytime. Sunday night into early Monday morning, temperatures will cool enough that some snow may be able to mix in across the northern panhandle. Any snow accumulations for most areas near sea level are likely to remain less than an inch. Although it is a more unlikely scenario due to the warmer temperatures, the possibility of marginally higher accumulations (1 to 3 inches) cannot be ruled out at this time. What snow that does fall is likely to be wet in nature.
About
Bohemia Basin Shelter offers a unique wilderness experience on East Yakobi Island in the Tongass National Forest. This Adirondack-style emergency shelter, constructed of yellow cedar in 2004, sits at the mouth of Bohemia Creek on the north end of Lisianski Strait, approximately 7 miles northwest of the town of Pelican. The shelter is open on one side and sleeps up to six people on provided bunks. Inside, you'll find a wood stove for warmth, a food preparation table, and pegs for hanging clothes to dry. The shelter features an outside deck with an accessible ramp and access to a rock fire ring with a bench. A small boat dock and gangway, managed by the City of Pelican, provides access to the shelter. This site serves as the trailhead for the 4.0 mile primitive trail to Takanis Lake, making it an ideal base for backcountry exploration. The shelter receives light use and is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. No water or restroom facilities are provided on-site, and campers must bring their own firewood as none is supplied. Access is by floatplane or boat only, adding to the remote wilderness character of this emergency shelter.
