About
George Island sits at the confluence of Cross Sound and Port Althorp in Southeast Alaska, approximately 2 miles from Elfin Cove and 45 miles west of Hoonah. This remote wilderness destination is accessible only by boat or kayak, with visitors typically landing at Granite Cove beach. The journey offers opportunities to spot whales and marine life along the way. The island's main attraction is a historic WWII gun emplacement reached via a half-mile uphill trail. Construction began in April 1942, and by September a 50-caliber, 6-inch steel gun weighing 18 tons was operational as part of coastal defenses. The trail is sometimes steep but rewards hikers with dramatic views of the surrounding rocky coves and craggy inlets. As a primitive camping area with no developed facilities, visitors must be fully self-sufficient. The lowland areas feature lush undergrowth of dwarf dogwood beneath evergreens, punctuated by wildflowers including bog orchids, asters, and common butterwort. At low tide, the intertidal zone reveals diverse marine life in rock crevices.
Directions
Access George Island by boat or kayak from Elfin Cove, approximately 2 miles away, or from Hoonah, approximately 45 miles to the east. Land at Granite Cove beach on the south end of the island.
