About
White Sulphur Springs Cabin sits on the northern shore of Bertha Bay, 65 miles northwest of Sitka on Chichagof Island within the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area. This newly built (2012) 12' x 14' Pan Abode style cabin accommodates up to 4 people with plywood bunks, a table with benches, and a wood stove for heat. The cabin overlooks beautiful North Pacific views with breakers crashing on nearby rocky cliffs, surrounded by spruce and hemlock forest. The natural warm springs bathhouse, located approximately 50 feet from the cabin, has been re-opened following temporary stabilization and is expected to remain safe for use for 3-5 years. Cabin reservations do not include exclusive use of the warm springs, and visitors should expect other users at any time. The area offers excellent opportunities for fishing, hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing. Brown bears frequent the area. Access is boat-only to Mirror Harbor, where the 0.9-mile White Sulphur Springs Trail begins. The fairly level trail parallels Bertha Bay to the cabin. Local knowledge is recommended for anchoring in Mirror Harbor, though anchorage is also possible in Porcupine Bay requiring a skiff ride to the cabin. Lake Elfendahl and Lake Morris are about a 2-hour hike away, and marked trails lead to Mirror Harbor and Sea Level Slough.
