About
Greentop Cabin is a historic two-story log cabin built in the 1940s by a fisherman on the southwest tip of Yakobi Island in the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area. The cabin sits on relatively flat terrain near the rugged, rocky coastline and is protected from the Pacific Ocean by Greentop Harbor. The surrounding area offers abundant seashore life and beautiful wilderness scenery. The cabin accommodates up to 6 people with 1 double bunk and 3 single bunks. Amenities include a wood stove for heating, a cooking area with table and benches, and an outhouse. Firewood is generally provided but not guaranteed. This is a primitive facility with no electricity, indoor plumbing, potable water, or cell phone coverage. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stove, cooking gear, lantern, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire starter, rain gear, and boots. Excellent opportunities exist for sea kayaking and boating in the numerous coves and protected bays, though boating should be planned for high tide due to rocks in the area. King salmon fishing is popular, and wildlife including deer, brown bear, and sea otters frequent the area. The 1-mile Greentop Cabin Trail leads to Lisianski Strait for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
Directions
Located on the southwest tip of Yakobi Island, approximately 41 miles west of Hoonah and 67 miles northwest of Sitka. Access by float plane is approximately 1 hour from Sitka or Juneau, 35 minutes from Hoonah. Access by boat is approximately 1 hour from Pelican. The cabin is in the northeast corner of Greentop Harbor. Use charts to enter the harbor and proceed slowly due to uncharted rocks. Consult local tide tables before departing.
