About
Frog Meadow Campground is a primitive dispersed camping area situated in the remote Portuguese Pass area of Sequoia National Forest, adjacent to the Golden Trout Wilderness in Tulare County. At an elevation of approximately 7,580 feet, this backcountry campground offers six primitive campsites designed for experienced campers seeking a rugged outdoor experience. The campground provides minimal amenities, including vault toilets and seasonal trash service during summer months, but no potable water is available on-site. There are no fees for camping at this location. Access to Frog Meadow requires navigating narrow and rough forest roads that may require high clearance or 4WD vehicles, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The area is popular with hunters during late summer and fall, and serves as an access point for trails leading into the Golden Trout Wilderness. The remote location and clear skies make it an excellent destination for stargazing. A historic Forest Service guard station near the campground is available for overnight rental through Recreation.gov. Due to the high elevation and seasonal snow, access is typically limited to mid-May through mid-October, weather dependent.
Directions
From Bakersfield or Porterville, take Highway 65 to Highway 155 east. Turn left on Old Stage Road (M3), continue to Sugarloaf Road (M9), then right on Forest Road 23S16 through Portuguese Pass. Turn left on Forest Road 24S50, travel 4.3 miles to Forest Road 24S86, turn right, and proceed half a mile to the campground.
