Frisco Campground
Open for the 2026 season from April 3 through November 29. Reservations required through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Beach closure in place from Buxton Village to near ORV Ramp 43 due to Hurricane Erin damage affecting oceanfront structures. Lifeguarded beach available at Frisco Beach Access. Camping limited to 14 consecutive nights between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. * WHERE...A portion of eastern North Carolina, including the following areas, Coastal Onslow, Duplin, East Carteret, Hatteras Island, Inland Onslow, Jones, Lenoir, Northern Craven, Ocracoke Island, Pamlico, Southern Craven and West Carteret. * WHEN...From Thursday morning through Friday evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - A slow moving cold front will approach and then stall over eastern North Carolina beginning early Thursday morning and lingering through Friday. Rounds of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms could bring rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches. Frisco Campground occupies a unique position within Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Hatteras Island, where elevated dunes afford some sites ocean views and dense vegetation provides more privacy than other seashore campgrounds. The rolling topography and proximity to the Atlantic make this a popular base for beachgoers, surfers, and anglers. At night, campers can watch the sweeping beacon of the nearby Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country. The campground features 117 sites across multiple loops, including standard, RV, and tent-only nonelectric sites. All sites accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet. Facilities include modern restrooms with flush toilets, potable water, and free cold outdoor showers. Each site has a paved parking pad, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Wood fires are prohibited; only charcoal cooking in grills or self-contained stoves is permitted. There are no hookups. Wooden boardwalks provide easy pedestrian access to the beach. An ORV ramp at the campground entrance allows beach driving with a valid Cape Hatteras ORV permit. The historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a short drive away. Sandy soil requires longer-than-normal tent stakes, and mosquitoes can be problematic, so netting and repellent are recommended.
Directions
From US-64 East at Nags Head, take NC-12 South through Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. In Frisco, turn left on Billy Mitchell Road and proceed to the campground at the end of the road.
