About
Great Island Cabin Camp is a historic fishing camp on South Core Banks within Cape Lookout National Seashore, three miles offshore from mainland North Carolina. The camp has been a favorite destination for anglers and beach enthusiasts for generations, offering a rare combination of remote barrier island solitude and basic cabin amenities. Each of the 23 rustic cabins includes bunk beds with mattresses, a private bathroom with sink and hot shower, a small kitchen with propane stove/oven, table and chairs, and an outdoor charcoal grill. Cabins range from 288 to 960 square feet and accommodate 4 to 12 guests. All cabins are wired for 110-volt electricity, but guests must bring their own generator (5,500 watts max or GFI-equipped). Refrigerators are not provided, so coolers are essential. The camp features a central bathhouse, seasonal potable water, dump station, and trash collection. Ice and gasoline are available for purchase at the cabin office. Access is by vehicle ferry or personal watercraft from Davis, NC. Once on the island, a 4WD high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended due to deep sand roads. All vehicles require an Off-Road Vehicle Driving Permit purchased through Recreation.gov prior to arrival. RVs and camping trailers are not permitted within the cabin camp area.
Directions
From Morehead City, NC, take Highway 70 east approximately 22 miles to Davis. Cape Lookout Cabin Camps and Ferry Service is located at 125 Grady Davis Lane. Davis Shore Ferry is at 148 Willis Road. A vehicle ferry crosses Core Sound to South Core Banks and the cabin camp. There are no paved roads on the island; 4WD high-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended.
