About

Cape Point Campground sits at the heart of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, offering 202 campsites spread across loops A through K. The campground is positioned between rolling sand dunes to the south and Buxton Woods, the largest remaining maritime forest on the North Carolina coast, to the north. Each site features a paved parking pad, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Loops D, E, and F are designated tent-only, while the remaining loops accommodate RVs and trailers. The campground provides easy access to arguably the best fishing and surfing on the East Coast. A short walk through the dunes leads to the beach at Cape Hatteras Point, where anglers have landed countless trophy fish for decades. Off-road vehicle ramps are accessible nearby for those who prefer to drive onto the beach. The 3/4-mile Buxton Woods Trail loop begins at the picnic area just north of the campground. The iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, standing 198 feet as the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, is located just north on Lighthouse Road. The Museum of the Sea and a lifeguard-staffed swimming beach at Buxton Beach are also within easy reach. Be prepared for fully exposed sites with no shade and potentially strong weather conditions.

Directions

From the north via US-158 East through Nags Head, turn south on NC-12. Continue through Hatteras Island to Buxton. Turn left onto Lighthouse Road at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse signs. The campground is on the right. From the west via US-64 East through Manteo and Nags Head, take NC-12 South to Buxton and turn left onto Lighthouse Road.
