Jockeys Ridge State Park

Closed — Day-use only park. No camping facilities available.

About

Located in Nags Head on North Carolina's Outer Banks, Jockeys Ridge State Park protects the tallest natural sand dune system on the East Coast. The park's 426 acres feature dramatic shifting dunes that serve as a popular destination for hang gliding, kite flying, and sandboarding. Two self-guided trails allow visitors to explore both the dune ecosystem and surrounding wetland habitats. The park includes a visitor center with a natural history museum, picnic facilities with shelters, tables and grills, and restrooms. A second access area provides entry to Roanoke Sound, where visitors can swim, paddle, kiteboard, and windsurf. The park also marks the eastern terminus of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Jockeys Ridge is strictly a day-use park with no overnight camping facilities. It is one of the most visited parks in the North Carolina state park system, offering unique coastal experiences and panoramic views of the Outer Banks.
