About
Cape Point Campground is nestled between rolling sand dunes and the largest remaining maritime forest on the North Carolina coast within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. As the largest campground in the seashore with 202 sites, it offers a prime location for beach enthusiasts and anglers. The campground sits within walking distance of Cape Point, famous for trophy fishing and world-class surfing.
Each campsite features a paved parking pad, picnic table, and charcoal grill. Loops D, E, and F are designated for tent camping only. The campground provides four bathhouse facilities with flush toilets and unheated outdoor showers dispersed throughout. Potable water spigots are readily available. A dump station is located back on Lighthouse Road. All sites are completely exposed with no shade trees, and the sandy soil requires longer tent stakes.
The campground's low-lying location makes it susceptible to flooding after heavy rain, which is why reservations are limited to a same-day window rather than the typical six-month advance booking available at other national seashore campgrounds. The 198-foot Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, is a short walk or bike ride away. The Buxton Woods Trail offers a 3/4-mile loop through maritime forest, and lifeguarded Buxton Beach operates from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
