About
Fox Ridge State Park campground sits within a 2,064-acre preserve just south of Charleston in Coles County, known for its steep, thickly wooded ridges, broad valleys, and miles of rugged hiking trails along the forested bluffs of the Embarras River. The terrain offers a striking departure from the flat prairie typical of central Illinois. The Wilderness Campground provides more than 40 sites with electric hookups, picnic tables, and cooking grills. A centrally located shower house serves campers from mid-April through early November, with flush toilets and drinking water available. A sanitary dump station is on-site for RV campers. Two rustic cabins are also available for rent. The park features an accessible gravel trail encircling Wilderness Pond with a fishing pier, the famous Eagle's Nest staircase with 144 steps, and year-round recreational opportunities including hiking, fishing, boating, and seasonal hunting in the northern section.
