Panther Meadows Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground typically opens around July 10, depending on snowpack, and closes November 1. Winter snow makes the access road impassable.

About

Panther Meadows Campground sits at 7,500 feet elevation on the southern slope of Mount Shasta, making it the highest campground on the mountain. This primitive walk-in facility features 15 campsites located a short distance from an unpaved parking area. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no piped water available; visitors must bring their own or purify water from nearby creek sources. The campground provides access to two small subalpine heather meadows that are sacred to the Winnemem Wintu tribe. Due to the fragile nature of these high-elevation ecosystems, visitors must exercise extreme care to avoid damaging the native vegetation. Recent restoration efforts by local tribes, volunteers, and the Forest Service have focused on revegetating native species and improving trails to minimize erosion. The setting offers spectacular open views and vistas of Mount Shasta and surrounding peaks. This is a first-come, first-served facility with no fees and no reservations. A strict 3-day limit per person per year is enforced. The remote location and high elevation make this campground suitable only for those prepared for alpine conditions and primitive camping.

Directions
