About
Panther Meadows Campground sits at 7,500 feet on the flanks of Mount Shasta, making it the highest campground on the mountain with expansive alpine views and vistas. The 15 walk-in sites are all within a short distance of the unpaved parking lot and offer a primitive camping experience with picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water; campers should bring adequate water or filter from the nearby creek. Two small sub-alpine heather meadows lie a short distance from the campground. These fragile meadows have been the focus of significant restoration efforts by local tribes, volunteers, and the Forest Service to revegetate native species and improve trail systems to minimize erosion. Due to their delicate nature, visitors must take great care not to damage these areas. The campground operates seasonally, typically opening around July 1st depending on winter snowpack and closing November 1st. Camping is free with a strict 3-day limit per person per year. No reservations are accepted; sites are first-come, first-served with self-registration on site.
Directions
From the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station, head east on Alma Street toward the mountain. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right at the signal onto Mt. Shasta Blvd. Continue two blocks to the next signal at Lake Street and turn left. Stay on Lake Street, climb the hill and veer left onto Everitt Memorial Highway. Continue past the four-way stop, school, and railroad tracks. Drive 12 miles up the mountain to Bunny Flat Trailhead, then continue another 1.7 miles and turn right at the Panther Meadows Campground sign into the unpaved parking lot. Campsites are a short walk from the parking area.
