Algoma Campground

Closed — Closed for winter. Gates on access roads in the Upper McCloud River area typically close November 1 and reopen April 1, though exact dates depend on snow conditions.

About

Located on the Upper McCloud River at an elevation of 3800 feet, Algoma Campground is a small, undeveloped camping area offering a primitive riverside experience. The campground features 8 user-created sites without tables or fire rings, plus a single vault toilet. No drinking water is available, so campers must bring their own. There are no fees for camping here. Algoma serves as the terminus of the McCloud River Trail, which runs 15 miles from Lower Falls through relatively remote terrain. This area receives significantly less traffic than the popular McCloud River Loop campgrounds downstream, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude along the river. The campground has a 15-day stay limit. Access is via a dirt road off Highway 89, approximately 14 miles from McCloud. From the McCloud Ranger Station, drive north on SR 89 for 13 miles to the turnoff for Algoma (Stouts Meadow) marked by a cross-country skier sign, then turn right and continue 1 mile to the campground. The access road is subject to seasonal winter closures.
