About
Algoma Campground sits at 3,800 feet elevation along the Upper McCloud River in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This small, undeveloped camping area features 8 user-created sites and a single vault toilet that is not regularly maintained. There is no potable water, no fee, and campers must bring their own toilet paper and pack out all trash. The campground serves as the terminus of the McCloud River Trail, a 15-mile multi-use path that begins at Lower Falls Day Use Area and passes three spectacular waterfalls: Upper, Middle, and Lower McCloud Falls. The trail also passes Lakin Dam and Cattle Camp Swimming Hole. Horses and mountain bikes are permitted on the trail. This area receives significantly less traffic than the more popular McCloud River Loop, offering a quieter riverside camping experience for those seeking solitude. A new bridge at Algoma has a posted weight limit.
Directions
From the McCloud Ranger Station, turn left on SR 89. Drive 13 miles to the turnoff for Algoma (Stouts Meadow) at the cross country skier sign. Turn right and go 1 mile to the campground.
