About
Fort Townsend Historical State Park preserves the site of one of Washington's earliest military posts, established in 1856 to protect settlers during conflicts with local tribes. The fort was abandoned in 1895 after a fire destroyed most structures, but concrete foundations, an intact powder magazine, and interpretive signs bring the history to life. Today the 367-acre park serves as a peaceful retreat on the Olympic Peninsula's northeast shore. The campground sits in a mature evergreen forest and includes 40 standard sites for tents and smaller RVs, plus four walk-in hiker/biker sites. A group camp at the historic torpedo tower accommodates up to 40 people. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground provides flush restrooms, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station. Sites can be reserved through Washington State Parks' online system up to nine months in advance. Beyond camping, 6.5 miles of trails wind through the forest and along the shoreline, offering views of Port Townsend Bay and Admiralty Inlet. The park's 100-foot bluff and quiet coves make it popular for wildlife watching, birdwatching, and launching kayaks. Cougars are occasionally sighted, so keep pets leashed and close.
Directions
From Highway 20 in Port Townsend, head south on Kearney Street which becomes Old Fort Townsend Road. Continue approximately 3 miles to the park entrance on the left.
