About

Fort Townsend Historical State Park is a 367-acre marine camping park located two miles south of Port Townsend on the shores of Port Townsend Bay. The park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and military history, featuring heavily wooded terrain with towering Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar trees alongside nearly 4,000 feet of saltwater shoreline. The campground includes 40 reservable standard campsites distributed across two loops, a tent loop and an RV loop, with a maximum site length of 40 feet. Four additional hiker/biker campsites are available first-come, first-served. One group camp accommodates up to 50 people at the historic torpedo tower site. While no hookups are provided, the park offers a dump station, drinking water, restrooms, and showers. Built in 1856, Fort Townsend operated intermittently as a U.S. Army post until fire destroyed the barracks in 1895. During World War II it served as an enemy-munitions defusing station before Washington State Parks assumed custody in 1953. Today, 6.5 miles of interpretive trails wind through the historic parade grounds and enchanted forest, revealing the fort's rich past through interpretive signage. The rocky beach provides opportunities for beachcombing, fishing, shellfish harvesting, and scuba diving, with moorage buoys available offshore for boaters.
