About
Fort Custer Modern Campground is situated within the 3,033-acre Fort Custer Recreation Area, offering 219 spacious and well-shaded sites known for their family atmosphere and convenient access to trails and water. The campground provides year-round camping with modern restrooms that remain open throughout winter, making it a popular destination for all seasons. The recreation area features three no-wake lakes (Eagle Lake, Whitford-Lawler Lake, and Jackson Hole Lake) plus the Kalamazoo River, providing ample opportunities for paddling, fishing, and swimming. A buoyed swim area at Eagle Lake includes an accessible walkway and a beach house with concessions and boat rentals available May 15 through September 15. Anglers can target bass, bluegill, crappie, pike, channel catfish, and on Eagle Lake, walleye and northern muskie. With over 40 miles of multi-use trails winding through second-growth forests and remnant prairie areas, the park is exceptionally popular with mountain bikers, hikers, equestrians, and cross-country skiers. The trail system connects to various amenities throughout the park. Originally established as Camp Custer military training center during World War II, the land was transferred to Michigan under President Nixon's Legacy of Parks program in 1971.
