About

Trine State Recreation Area encompasses nearly 200 acres of rolling wooded hills, open meadows, wetlands, and lakefront in Steuben County, Indiana, adjacent to Pokagon State Park. The property was acquired in 2007 through a unique public-private partnership to conserve the land and protect the Seven Sisters chain of lakes watershed. Since acquisition, the area has undergone extensive restoration, including removal of former church camp structures and renovation of 12 rustic cabins originally built as part of Wing Haven Resort in 1948. The site offers diverse outdoor recreation opportunities including a 2.5-mile multi-use Rolling Oaks Trail ideal for mountain biking and hiking, a public fishing pier, and boat rentals including paddleboats, rowboats, and pontoons. Swenson Lodge, the restored dining lodge from the Wing Haven era, now serves as a day-use conference center. The property features restored natural ecosystems including wetlands and a rare fen habitat, providing excellent opportunities for nature observation and photography. Historically, the land operated as Wing Haven Resort from 1948 to the early 1970s under the management of Helen and Ben Swenson, who previously managed Pokagon State Park's Potawatomi Inn. All original Wing Haven buildings remain and were named following a bird theme by Helen Swenson, an artist and naturalist. Trine State Recreation Area is managed as a unit of Pokagon State Park and provides a quieter, more intimate outdoor experience compared to its larger neighbor.
