About
Pokagon State Park, one of Indiana's original state parks established in 1925, offers comprehensive camping facilities near Angola in northeastern Indiana. The campground system includes 200 electric sites across Campgrounds 1, 3, 4, and 5, plus 73 non-electric sites in Campground 2. All sites feature fire rings, picnic tables, and parking spurs, with modern restroom facilities and hot showers available. ADA accessible sites are available in Campground 3. The park also operates a large group camp with cabin accommodations for up to 120 people and five youth tent camping areas. Located between Lake James and Snow Lake in Steuben County, which has more natural lakes than any other Indiana county, the park offers abundant water recreation including boating, swimming, and fishing. The landscape features rolling wooded hills, wetlands, and meadows shaped by glaciers 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. Historic stone and log structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1934 and 1942 are preserved throughout the property. Pokagon is particularly renowned as Indiana State Parks' winter wonderland. The refrigerated quarter-mile toboggan run operates weekends from late November through February, reaching speeds of 35-40 mph. Winter activities include cross-country ski rentals, sledding, and ice fishing. The campground remains open year-round with Campground 3 operating through winter with heated comfort stations. Eight miles of hiking trails wind through diverse habitats including the Potawatomi Nature Preserve, with notable features like Hell's Point overlook. Additional facilities include the Potawatomi Inn, nature center, saddle barn with guided horseback rides, and boat rentals.
