About

Forked Pine Campground is located on the eastern shores of Ashurst Lake in Coconino National Forest, approximately 20 miles southeast of Flagstaff. The campground features 24 campsites huddled in a picturesque stand of gnarly old juniper trees and pinyon pines along the lakeshore. Access is via a 4-mile graded dirt road through Ashurst Lake Campground. Ashurst Lake is stocked with trout and provides good fishing opportunities, along with enough wind for excellent windsurfing and board sailing. The lake is notable for its ability to maintain high water levels even during drought years. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding during spring waterfowl migration, when white-faced ibises, cinnamon teal, pintails, and other ducks can be observed in the shallows. Bald eagles, osprey, hawks, and various songbirds are also common in the area. A graveled road surrounds most of the lake, providing convenient access for passenger vehicles and bicycles. Rustic gravel and two-track roads in the surrounding juniper and ponderosa pine mixed forest offer opportunities for mountain biking, walking, and wildlife viewing. The San Francisco Peaks provide a majestic backdrop, showcasing Arizona's volcanic geological history. Boating is permitted with single electric motors or single gasoline engines limited to 10 horsepower.

Directions

From Flagstaff, drive south 19 miles on Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3), then east approximately 4 miles on Forest Road 82E. The entrance to Forked Pine Campground is located up a 4-mile graded dirt road through Ashurst Lake Campground.
