About

Apache Maid Cabin is a historic Forest Service facility situated at 6,382 feet elevation at the eastern base of Apache Maid Mountain, just two hours north of Phoenix and 45 minutes from Camp Verde. Built in 1909 by cattleman Charles Babbitt, the cabin has been carefully restored to its historic character after serving decades as a ranch house and Forest Service ranger station. The 520-square-foot cabin accommodates up to 6 overnight guests with one bedroom containing a bunk bed with double bottom and twin top, plus a rollaway single bed, and a living room with a futon couch. The kitchen has a stove but no refrigerator, and the cabin features solar lighting and gas heating. An outdoor vault toilet is located 50 yards from the house. Outside amenities include a propane grill, picnic tables, and a fire pit. The site can accommodate one RV for a maximum total occupancy of 10 people. The cabin sits in the shade of a ponderosa pine forest just south of the Mogollon Rim and provides easy access to outdoor recreation opportunities. Nearby Stoneman Lake offers fishing for northern pike, yellow perch, and sunfish, along with bird watching for migratory waterfowl. Sedona's red rock canyons and numerous hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails are within an hour's drive. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility, and guests must bring all linens, bedding, water for drinking and cooking, and remove all trash. Access is through a locked gate with combination codes provided at reservation.

Directions

From Phoenix, take I-17 north to Exit 306 (Stoneman Lake Road/Forest Road 213). Go east on Stoneman Lake Road for approximately 6.5 miles to the Forest Road 229 junction. Turn right on Forest Road 229 and go 4.5 miles to Forest Road 230. Veer right, continuing on Forest Road 229 and continue approximately a quarter-mile to the intersection of Forest Road 229 and Forest Road 620 (to the Apache Maid Lookout). Veer right; the gate to the cabin is at this intersection on the left side. Look for the small sign that reads Apache Maid Cabin. The cabin is not on the mountain, so if you are driving uphill, you have missed the entrance gate. High-clearance vehicles recommended; four-wheel drive required during inclement weather.
