About
Davidson Lake Shelter is a historic 12' x 10' three-sided Adirondack-style shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Located at the western end of Davidson Lake in central Admiralty Island, the shelter features a gravel floor and serves as a rest stop along the Cross Admiralty Canoe Route. This 32-mile wilderness paddling route connects a series of lakes, streams, and portage trails across Admiralty Island National Monument within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. The shelter is in one of Alaska's most remote wilderness areas, known to the Tlingit people as Kootznoowoo, meaning "Fortress of the Bear." Admiralty Island has one of the highest densities of brown bears in North America. The area offers exceptional wilderness experiences with opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing for cutthroat trout, and backcountry paddling. Non-potable water is available from Davidson Lake. Access is by float plane from Juneau (approximately 40 minutes) or by canoe via the Cross Admiralty Canoe Route from either Mole Harbor on the east side or Mitchell Bay on the west side of the island. The remote location and light usage make this shelter ideal for experienced wilderness travelers seeking solitude in pristine temperate rainforest and lake environments.
