About

Davidson Lake Shelter is a historic backcountry shelter built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of a series of 15 Adirondack-style shelters along the cross Admiralty Island canoe route. The 12' x 10' three-sided structure features peeled log construction with wooden shake roof and walls, and a gravel floor. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, the shelter provides basic overnight accommodations in the remote Kootznoowoo Wilderness. The shelter sits at the western end of Davidson Lake in the central region of Admiralty Island, surrounded by temperate rainforest, muskeg meadows, and pristine waterways. Access is exclusively by float plane (approximately 40 minutes from Juneau) or by canoe via the cross-Admiralty route from Mitchell Bay or Angoon. The lake is typically ice-free from early May through mid-November. Trails connect the shelter to Salt Lake (2.78 miles), Freshwater Lake, Mitchell Bay, and Thayer Lake, offering opportunities for extended backcountry travel through varied ecosystems. Admiralty Island is known as Kootznoowoo ("Fortress of the Bears") and has one of the highest brown bear densities in North America, so proper food storage and bear awareness are essential.
