Little Shaheen Cabin
Open

Open and available for reservations via Recreation.gov. The lake is typically ice-free mid-May through November. In fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface preventing float plane landings. Visitors should bring extra supplies for 2-5 additional days in case of weather delays.

About

Little Shaheen Cabin sits at the edge of Hasselborg Lake under an old-growth canopy of spruce and hemlock at 300 feet elevation. This 1930s-era pre-cut cedar log cabin in pan-abode style is one of three USFS cabins on the seven-mile-long lake, which forms part of the Admiralty Island Canoe Route. Big Shaheen Cabin is connected by a 100-yard trail. The lake provides excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, and kokanee salmon, and a skiff with oars is provided for guest use. The surrounding Kootznoowoo Wilderness encompasses nearly a million acres of dense forest, glacier-fed streams, and muskeg openings. Brown bears frequent the area, Sitka black-tailed deer inhabit the forest, and bald eagles perch along the shoreline. Several primitive trails extend into the backcountry, with boat-accessible trails leading to Lake Guerin, Beaver Lake, Lake McKinney, and Hasselborg River. The cabin is primitive with no running water or electricity. An oil stove provides heat (bring #1 stove oil), and an outside pit toilet is provided. Visitors must pack in all food, drinking water, sleeping bags, pads, cooking gear, toilet paper, and garbage bags. The lake is typically ice-free from mid-May through November; float planes cannot land on frozen water, and inclement weather can extend trips by several days.

Directions

Access is by float plane or canoe with portage only. Float plane from Juneau takes approximately 45 minutes. By canoe, the route is about 10 miles from Mole Harbor with portages. The cabin is located midway on the eastern shore of Hasselborg Lake in central Admiralty Island. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka C-1 and C-2.
