About
Lake Guerin Shelter is a historic 12' x 10' three-sided Adirondack-style shelter constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Situated on the west end of Lake Guerin within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness on Admiralty Island National Monument, this primitive backcountry shelter provides basic overnight accommodation for paddlers traversing the famous Admiralty Island Canoe Route. The shelter features a dirt floor and offers protection from the elements in this remote corner of the Tongass National Forest. There are no restrooms or potable water at this site; visitors must be fully self-sufficient and prepared for wilderness conditions. The surrounding area provides opportunities for lake fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing, and observing the diverse plant life of the temperate rainforest. Access requires significant planning and effort. Most visitors arrive by float plane from Juneau (approximately 40 minutes) or via an extended canoe and portage journey of about 8 miles from Mitchell Bay, typically launching from Distin Lake or Hasselborg Lake. A skiff from nearby Sportsmen Cabin may also be available. This is true wilderness camping in bear country on an island home to one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in North America.
Directions
Access by float plane from Juneau (approximately 40 minutes one-way) or by canoe/portage from Distin Lake or Hasselborg Lake, roughly 8 miles from Mitchell Bay. A skiff from Sportsmen Cabin is available. Suggested USGS topo maps: Sitka C-1, C-2.
