AQAMT The Montana Department of Environmental Quality has issued an air quality alert for Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Flathead, Granite, Jefferson, Lake, Lewis and Clark, Lincoln, Madison, Mineral, Missoula, Powell, Ravalli, Sanders, Silver Bow counties in effect until 9AM on 08/10/2026 An Air Quality Alert means that particulates have been trending upwards and that an exceedance of the 24 hour National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) has occurred or may occur in the near future. Elevated particulate levels from wildfire smoke As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Columbia Falls are Very Unhealthy. As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Dillon, Libby and Thompson Falls are Unhealthy. As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Billings, Butte, Hamilton, Lewistown and Sleeping Giant are Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. As of 7AM on 08/09/2026, particulate levels in Cut Bank, Frenchtown, Great Falls, Havre, Helena, Malta and Missoula are Moderate. When air quality is Very Unhealthy... Fire Island Campground is a remote, boat-access-only campground situated on an island within Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana's Flathead National Forest. With just 4 designated campsites, this primitive facility offers a secluded camping experience for those willing to travel by boat to reach it. The campground is located approximately 16 miles from the town of Hungry Horse. The campground provides basic restroom facilities but does not have drinking water, so campers must bring their own water supply. The setting offers excellent opportunities for lake fishing, boating, and tent camping in a forested environment. Glacier National Park and Hungry Horse Dam are nearby attractions for those looking to extend their adventure. This is an ideal destination for experienced campers seeking solitude and a backcountry atmosphere without a lengthy hike. The boat-in access naturally limits crowds and provides a quieter camping experience compared to road-accessible campgrounds in the area.
Directions
Boat access only. Launch from one of the boat ramps on Hungry Horse Reservoir (accessible via East Side Reservoir Road #38 or West Side Reservoir Road #895) and travel by boat approximately 16 miles from Hungry Horse to the island campground.
