About
The Equestrian Campground at Lake Carlos State Park is specially designed for campers traveling with horses. Located in the northern section of this glacially-sculpted park, the campground features seven partially-shaded campsites that can collectively accommodate up to 30 people. Each site includes essential amenities such as a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and large tethering poles to secure horses safely. The campground serves as the gateway to nine miles of well-maintained horseback riding trails that wind through the park's diverse ecosystems, including restored prairies, maple-basswood forests, tamarack bogs, and scenic overlooks of Lake Carlos. During summer months, some trails are shared with hikers. The Prairie Pothole Trail showcases the area's glacial history and prairie restoration efforts, while other trails provide opportunities to spot wildlife including deer, beaver, loons, and herons. Lake Carlos State Park is located approximately 10 miles north of Alexandria in Douglas County, Minnesota. Peak season runs from mid-May through mid-October, though reservations can be made year-round. The park's upper campground operates year-round, and modern amenities including showers and flush toilets are available seasonally at nearby facilities, with vault toilets accessible during the off-season.
