Equestrian Campground

Located in the northern section of Lake Carlos State Park, the Equestrian Campground serves horse campers with seven sites that can accommodate up to 30 people total. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and tethering poles or high lines for horses. Four of the seven sites offer electric hookups for an additional fee. Water is available at the campground, though sanitation facilities are primitive vault toilets; flush toilets and showers are available at the nearby Upper Campground. The campground provides direct access to nine miles of horseback trails that traverse the park's diverse landscape of glacial lakes, oak-basswood forests, and restored prairies. Lake Carlos State Park covers 1,254 acres about 10 miles north of Alexandria and was established in 1937. The park is known for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including beavers, deer, loons, and great blue herons. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota state parks reservation system. A Minnesota Horse Pass is required for all riders over age 16. The park also offers boat access to Lake Carlos and Hidden Lake, swimming beaches, and interpretive programs.

Directions

From Alexandria, take Highway 29 north for approximately 10 miles. Turn left onto County Road 38 and follow signs to Lake Carlos State Park. The equestrian campground is located in the northern section of the park.
