About
Encampment River Campground is a small, primitive Bureau of Land Management campground located along the scenic Encampment River in Carbon County, Wyoming. With just 8 first-come, first-served campsites, this intimate campground offers a quiet base camp for anglers, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring or grill, sandy tent pad, and parking space, though there are no pull-through sites available.
The campground's prime location provides direct access to the Encampment River, which the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has classified as very good trout waters with statewide importance. Both rainbow and brown trout are abundant, making this a popular destination for fly fishing. The Encampment River Trail begins at the campground and follows the river through the Encampment River Canyon Wilderness Study Area, offering excellent opportunities for day hiking and backpacking.
The surrounding riparian environment features cottonwoods, willows, juniper, wild rose, native grasses, and sagebrush. Wildlife is plentiful and diverse, with visitors frequently spotting bald eagles, bighorn sheep perched on canyon walls, pronghorn, mule deer, and grouse. Rattlesnakes are also present in the area. The campground is located about 2 miles south of the town of Encampment via County Road 353 and BLM Road 3407. Campers should bring their own potable water and firewood, as these are not provided on-site.
