Elroy-Sparta Trail Walk-In Campground

About

The Elroy Walk-In Campground is one of two Wisconsin DNR-operated campgrounds serving the historic Elroy-Sparta State Trail, America's first rails-to-trails project. Positioned along Highway 71 near the intersection with Highway 80 in Elroy, the campground is accessed via an underpass beneath the highway, followed by a 100-yard asphalt path leading to the camping area. This primitive campground caters primarily to trail users, including hikers, bikers, and cross-country skiers exploring the 32-mile trail system. Each walk-in campsite features a fire ring and picnic table. The campground provides hand pumps for water and vault toilets. An open picnic shelter at the Elroy location offers additional gathering space. Vehicles must be parked in the adjacent lot, making this a true walk-in camping experience. The campground operates seasonally and reservations can be made online through the Wisconsin State Parks system. Campers must follow Wisconsin's firewood rules to prevent the spread of invasive pests and diseases, and no firewood is sold on-site.

Directions

In Sparta, turn south on John Street, which becomes Igloo Road. After crossing under Interstate 90, turn left on Imac Avenue to reach the campground at 9890 Imac Avenue.
