Elroy-Sparta Trail Walk-In Campground

Closed

The campground operates seasonally from late May through October. Based on current availability, the campground opens May 22, 2026 for the season. The trail tunnels close annually from November 1 through April 30.

About

Located along Highway 71 near its intersection with Highway 80 in Elroy, this primitive walk-in campground is one of two DNR-operated campgrounds serving the 32.5-mile Elroy-Sparta State Trail. The self-registering campground sits in a wooded area directly adjacent to the trail, accessible via an underpass that allows campers to walk under the highway. Vehicles are parked in an adjacent lot, and all gear must be carried approximately 100 yards on an asphalt path to the sites. Each campsite features a fire ring and picnic table. The campground provides hand-pump water and vault toilets. An open-air picnic shelter serves as a communal gathering area. The primitive nature of the campground makes it ideal for trail users seeking an overnight stay while biking or hiking the historic rail-trail. The Elroy-Sparta State Trail passes through wetlands, prairies, farmland, and unglaciated terrain, connecting five small communities and featuring three rock tunnels carved through the hillsides. The trail operates year-round, though the tunnels close annually from November 1 through April 30. Bicyclists aged 16 and older must purchase a state trail pass.
