About

Located in Vernon County within the unglaciated Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, Wildcat Mountain State Park Horse Campground serves equestrians seeking access to some of the state's most scenic riding terrain. The 24-site campground sits northeast of the park office off Taylor Valley Road and connects directly to the park's 15-mile trail system, which includes multiple loops ranging from the 1.7-mile Red Loop to longer circuits like the 3-mile Purple Loop with three ridge overlooks. The campground features vault toilets, potable water, and equestrian-specific facilities including corrals, hitching posts, tether poles at each site, parking pads, and loading ramps. Campers must bring their own tethering ropes. A state trail pass is required for riders 16 and older. The trails wind through forested hills and valleys with gradual climbs reaching 200-250 feet, and riders should avoid wet conditions to minimize erosion. No horse rentals are available at the park, though experienced riders can rent horses in nearby Ontario. The park is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with campground check-in at 3 p.m. and check-out at 1 p.m. Reservations are available through the Wisconsin State Park reservation system.
