About

The Elroy Walk-In Campground is one of two Wisconsin DNR-operated primitive campgrounds serving the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, America's first rails-to-trails conversion. The 32-mile trail passes through three historic railroad tunnels and draws hikers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers throughout the year. The campground sits just west of Elroy at the intersection of Highways 71 and 80. Access is strictly walk-in: campers park in the adjacent lot, pass through an underpass beneath Highway 71, and follow a 100-yard asphalt path to the camping area. The 13 tent sites are arranged in Allen Thompson Memorial Park near a small lake. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Vault toilets and a hand-pump water source serve the campground, along with an open picnic shelter unique to this location. Firewood is not sold on-site; campers must bring their own compliant firewood following Wisconsin regulations to prevent pest and disease spread. A state trail pass is required for bicycling on the trail. The campground operates on a self-registration system with fees deposited in a drop box. Maximum occupancy is six persons per site.
