Established in 1948, Wildcat Mountain State Park is one of Wisconsin's oldest state parks, situated on a dramatic ridge overlooking the Kickapoo River valley in Vernon County. The park encompasses 3,643 acres of rugged terrain in the Driftless Area and offers diverse camping options for families, equestrians, and groups. The family campground sits atop the mountain near a popular overlook, featuring 30 reservable sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus access to flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. For a more secluded experience, 20 cart-in sites are available within 400 feet of parking, nestled under pine and hardwood stands with vault toilets nearby. The 24-site horse campground includes corrals, hitching posts, loading ramps, and tether poles at each site. Three group campsites can accommodate up to 25 or 50 people each. The park is renowned for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors enjoy over 20 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, with multiple ridge-top overlooks providing stunning valley views. The Kickapoo River offers excellent canoeing, kayaking, and trout fishing opportunities with over 40 fish species. Winter activities include cross-country skiing on groomed trails, snowshoeing, and exploring the seasonal ice cave. The park provides a truly dark sky experience for stargazing. All campsites can be reserved through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system.
