About
Castle Mound Campground serves as the headquarters for Black River State Forest in west-central Wisconsin, conveniently located on Highway 12 near Black River Falls and Interstate 94. This modern campground operates year-round with 35 sites, including 21 non-electric and 14 electric sites, with one ADA-designated electric site. During winter months, a limited number of sites are plowed when conditions and staffing allow. The campground provides full amenities including accessible flush toilet and shower buildings, vault toilets, a sanitary dump station, firewood sales, garbage and recycling facilities, and an indoor picnic shelter. Water systems including flush toilets, showers, and dump stations are weather-dependent and may not be available from approximately October 1 through May 15. Hand pump water is available when other water systems are closed. Castle Mound is named for the 400-million-year-old Cambrian sandstone butte rising 180 feet above the surrounding sand plain. The campground offers access to a 1.5-mile nature trail and a 1.5-mile cross-country skiing and hiking trail. Despite its proximity to civilization, the campground maintains a secluded forest atmosphere. Reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin State Parks reservation system.
