Castle Mound Campground serves as the headquarters for Black River State Forest, located just east of Black River Falls on Highway 12. The modern family campground operates year-round with 35 sites: 21 non-electric and 14 electric, including one ADA-designated electric site. Facilities include an accessible shower building, flush toilet buildings available seasonally, and vault toilet buildings open year-round. The campground is well-equipped with pump water access, a sanitary dump station, garbage and recycling station, and firewood sales. An indoor log cabin shelter with a stone fireplace, electricity, tables, and outdoor cooking grill is available for rent. A playground provides family recreation, while nature trails with interpretive signs wind through the surrounding forest. Direct access to the Castle Mound hiking trail makes this an excellent base for exploring the forest's scenic overlook. Winter camping is available when conditions and staffing permit, though water systems are typically unavailable from October through mid-May. Black River State Forest spans the heart of west-central Wisconsin, approximately two hours northwest of Madison and two hours southeast of Minneapolis near Interstate 94.
