About

Elmwood Hunt Camp is a primitive camping area located in the northeastern section of the Francis Marion National Forest, approximately four miles off US Highway 17 via Rutledge Road (SC Route 857-S). The camp is free of charge and operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round with a 14-day stay limit. The site is most popular during deer and turkey hunting seasons on the Waterhorn Hunt Unit, and it doubles as a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources game check station during big-game season. Basic amenities include potable water available from a hand pump, vault toilets, picnic tables, and grills. As a primitive camp, there are no hookups, showers, or developed RV facilities. The surrounding Francis Marion National Forest offers extensive hunting opportunities and serves as habitat for abundant wildlife populations, making this an ideal base camp for hunters seeking access to the Waterhorn Hunt Unit.

Directions

From Charleston, take US Highway 17 north past McClellanville to Rutledge Road (SC Route 857-S). Turn left onto Rutledge Road and drive four miles to Elmwood Recreation Area.
