Elkhorn Campground

Open — Open year-round first-come, first-served. Water systems are shut off for the season. Boat ramp currently closed due to low reservoir levels.

About

Elkhorn Campground occupies the northernmost location on Glendo Reservoir's western shore, accessed via Highway 319 approximately 5 miles north of the town of Glendo. This small, primitive campground consists of 9 campsites and one day use site spread across open grassland and native vegetation. Sites 4 through 9 are situated along a line of cottonwood trees, while sites 2 and 3 occupy more exposed positions in an open field. Site 3 features a large ADA-compliant camping pad. The campground is particularly popular in spring when water levels are high, typically from early May through early July. During this period, the boat ramp provides the closest access to the river inlet and canyon, making it a favorite among anglers and boaters. Multiple points along the shoreline offer easy foot access to the water when reservoir levels are up. Due to significant fluctuations in Glendo Reservoir water levels throughout the year, the boat ramp and courtesy dock are often the first in the park to become unusable as water recedes. By early to mid-July, the ramp is frequently high and dry, which is why the campground transitions from reservable status to first-come, first-served after July 15. The vault toilet is located in the boat ramp parking area, requiring a quarter-mile walk from the farthest sites.
