About
Located in the Maury Mountains of Ochoco National Forest, Elkhorn Campground offers a secluded camping experience that's surprisingly easy to reach. The campground sits on the edge of Forest Service land, nestled under towering ponderosa pine trees that provide welcome shade and a peaceful atmosphere. This primitive, no-fee campground features basic amenities including vault toilets and picnic tables at each campsite. Campers should come prepared with their own water, as none is available on-site. Despite its remote feel, the campground is accessible via Forest Service Road 16 and serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. A major draw for visitors is the proximity to the Maury Mountain agate beds, where rockhounds can search for distinctive red, green, and gold moss agates. The campground's location in the Ochoco National Forest also provides opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the high desert ponderosa pine ecosystem of Central Oregon. The 14-day stay limit applies to all Forest Service sites in the area.
Directions
From Prineville, travel southeast on Highway 380 for about 32 miles. Turn south onto Forest Service Road 16 and continue for about 5 miles. Elkhorn Campground will be on your left, just past the National Forest Boundary.
