About
Ochoco Ranger Station was established in 1906 as part of the Western Division of the Blue Mountain Forest Reserves. By 1911, it was one of seven ranger districts on the newly formed Ochoco National Forest. This house was constructed in 1940 specifically for the district ranger by the Civilian Conservation Corps and showcases the rustic architectural styles common to that era. Nestled under big ponderosa pines, the rental sits in upper Ochoco Valley at an elevation surrounded by the Ochoco Mountain range, known for its unusual rock formations. The highest peak, Lookout Mountain at 6,900 feet, is nearby. The scenic location offers easy access to numerous recreational opportunities year-round. Summer activities include the 8-mile Lookout Mountain Trail #804 which begins at the ranger station, fishing and swimming at Walton Lake about 7 miles northeast, and exploring Big Summit Prairie. Winter enthusiasts can enjoy Walton Sno-Park's cross-country ski trails and snowmobile routes. Visitors may encounter wild free-roaming horses, as well as deer, elk, antelope, squirrels, chipmunks, hawks, osprey, eagles, and great horned owls throughout the forest.
