About
Trout Lake Cabin is a large, two-story log cabin situated on the eastern shore of Trout Lake in the Chugach National Forest on the Kenai Peninsula. The cabin accommodates up to 8 people with bunk space for 7, and is equipped with counter space, a table, benches, and a wood stove for heat. Basic amenities include a splitting maul, hand saw, and an outhouse. A rowboat with oars is provided for exploring the lake during non-frozen months. The cabin has no electricity, running water, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood, so visitors must come prepared with sleeping bags and pads, cook stove, cooking gear, and food. The cabin is accessed via a 7.5-mile hike from the Resurrection Pass South Trailhead, with an additional half-mile on a spur trail. Alternative access includes floatplane, skiing, horseback, and snowmobile (during open seasons). The trail is closed to horse and pack stock from April 1 to June 30, and is open to over-snow motorized vehicles from December 1 to April 30 every other winter season. Winter travelers must be prepared to evaluate avalanche and over-ice travel conditions. The cabin is surrounded by willow, spruce, and birch forest with open brushy areas, offering views of nearby mountains. Trout Lake provides excellent fishing for rainbow trout and whitefish, and the surrounding area supports moose, black bears, brown bears, and wolves. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, skijoring, snowshoeing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. Maximum stay is 7 consecutive days per 30-day period, reduced to 3 consecutive days from May 15 to August 31.
Directions
From the Resurrection Pass South Trailhead, hike 7 miles to the spur trail, then continue another half-mile to the cabin. Can also be accessed by floatplane, skiing, horseback, and snowmobile during open seasons. Winter travelers must evaluate avalanche and over-ice travel conditions.
