About

Sun Canyon L&C is a primitive dispersed camping area situated in the Rocky Mountain Front region of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, west of Augusta, Montana. The site lies near Gibson Reservoir and Wood Lake, providing a base for exploring one of Montana's most spectacular wilderness areas. This is undeveloped dispersed camping with no facilities. There are no toilets, no potable water, and no trash services. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water and packing out all waste. The area is known for bear activity, and mandatory food storage in approved bear-resistant containers is required. Recreation opportunities include fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout in Gibson Reservoir and area streams, hiking into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and horseback riding. The Continental Divide Trail passes through nearby areas. Access is via forest roads west of Augusta; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
