Sun Canyon L&C Campground is situated in a rugged, scenic area within the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, conveniently positioned along Gibson Reservoir on the Rocky Mountain Front. Located approximately 25 miles west of Augusta, Montana, the campground offers visitors a gateway to both water-based recreation and backcountry exploration. The reservoir provides excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing, and kayaking, with particularly scenic views at dawn and dusk. The surrounding area is popular for hiking and biking, with access to various trails including the Sun Canyon Trail that extends deeper into the national forest and toward the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The campground sits at the edge of prime wildlife habitat, and visitors should be bear aware as the area has a healthy population of both black and grizzly bears. As a primitive Forest Service campground, Sun Canyon L&C does not offer amenities like water or restrooms. Campers should come fully prepared with all necessary supplies for a self-sufficient camping experience. Directions

From Augusta, Montana, head west on the gravel road toward Gibson Reservoir. After approximately 5 miles, turn right at the signs for Sun Canyon Lodge. Continue for another 18 miles on gravel roads. Upon entering the Lewis and Clark National Forest, the road becomes paved. At the Sun Canyon Lodge sign, turn left and proceed 0.25 miles to the lodge.
