About

Douthat State Park, one of Virginia's original six state parks from 1936 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers three distinct picnic shelters available for rental. Nestled in the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains of Bath County, these shelters provide ideal gathering spaces for families, reunions, and events. Camp Douthat Shelter 1 is the largest facility, accommodating up to 100 people under cover with room for approximately 200 additional guests around it. This shelter features electricity, two enclosed-end fireplaces, water access, and three horseshoe pits. Camp Carson Shelter 2 holds 70 people and includes universally accessible restroom facilities approximately 100 feet away, along with a horseshoe pit and water access. Camp Malone Shelter 3 is the most scenic option, accommodating 50 people with views overlooking the dam area and 50-acre Douthat Lake. This shelter includes electricity, water access, and two horseshoe pits. All shelters can be rented from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and include access to nearby playgrounds, hiking trails from the park's extensive 43-mile trail system, and restroom facilities. Shelters must be reserved in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system. The park itself offers a traditional mountain experience with trout fishing, swimming, boating, and over 40 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
