About

Beaver Dam Horse Campground is the designated equestrian facility at Douthat State Park, one of Virginia's original six state parks established in 1936 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The campground features 14 mostly shaded electric and water sites with both 30 and 50-amp service on gravel pads, including four pull-through sites that accommodate RVs up to 40 feet with space for tow vehicles. The facility includes 13 covered horse stalls measuring 12 by 12 feet, rented separately from campsites. Only one horse is allowed per stall, and horses must not remain in trailers or other areas of the park. At least one person must stay in the campground overnight for the entire duration of stall reservations. Guests provide their own hay and water buckets and are responsible for cleaning up after their horses, with rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows provided by the park. A bathhouse with showers and a dump station serve the campground. The campground provides access to 6 miles of bridle trails and additional multi-use trails throughout the 4,545-acre park. A horse trailer parking lot is located at the Flat Run trailhead. The park does not offer horse rentals. Situated in the Allegheny Mountains near Millboro, Virginia, the campground serves as a base for exploring Douthat's 43 miles of trails amid breathtaking mountain scenery. Generators are not permitted in any of the park's campgrounds. Reservations are site-specific and can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks reservation system.
