Greenwood Point Campground

Open

Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No advance reservations. No potable water is available; campers must bring their own. Bear-proof food storage required.

About

Greenwood Point Campground at Lake Moomaw offers the solitude of an isolated and remote location within the George Washington National Forest. With no road access, reaching the campground is part of the adventure. Visitors can strap on a pack and hike the Greenwood Point Trail from Bolar Mountain Campground, or paddle or canoe directly to the shores from Fortney Branch Boat Launch or Coles Point Day Use Area. The campground features five primitive wooded campsites arranged around an open, grassy common area. Lakeside views and the absence of vehicle traffic make this a popular destination for those seeking privacy and quiet. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must pack in all drinking water. This is bear country, and proper food storage is required. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet. Quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Directions

Access by boat from Fortney Branch Boat Launch or Coles Point Day Use Area on Lake Moomaw. Alternatively, hike in via the Greenwood Point Trail from Bolar Mountain Campground (trailhead at campsite #63 in the cul-de-sac of campground 3). From Covington, take US 220 north to Hwy 39, turn left on Hwy 39, then left on Hwy 600 (Bolars Draft Road) to Bolar Mountain Recreation Area.
