About

Dirty Devil Primitive Camping is a vast primitive camping area located along the Dirty Devil River within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This shoreline access area provides vehicle-accessible dispersed camping with minimal facilities for those seeking a rugged desert camping experience. There are no designated campsites, allowing visitors to select their own camping spot along the river within NRA boundaries. The area features vault toilets year-round at the entrance, but no potable water, trash service, or other amenities. When vault toilets are unavailable, campers must bring portable toilets and dispose of waste properly in the sewer system. The remote location means ranger patrols are periodic, and cellular and WiFi signals may be unavailable. The terrain consists entirely of rocks and sand with no level ground, and cliffs become steeper as you approach the river. Camping costs $12 per night, payable at the iron ranger fee station at the dirt road entrance or online. Access is from Highway 95 approximately 44 miles south of Hanksville, turning right at a small brown sign indicating the Dirty Devil Shoreline Access Area. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM, and campfires are allowed in NPS-provided receptacles and along Lake Powell's shoreline below 3,700 feet elevation, except in developed areas. The nearby Hite area is currently closed to the public, and vehicles are not permitted within the Dirty Devil Shoreline Access Area boundaries.

Directions

From Hanksville, Utah: Drive south on Highway 95 for approximately 44 miles. Turn right onto the dirt road where the fee station and vault toilets are located. A small brown sign indicating the Dirty Devil Shoreline Access Area will appear as you approach the turnoff, but there is no sign at the actual turnoff. After paying the camping fee, choose your camping spot along the Dirty Devil River within Glen Canyon NRA boundaries.
