Detroit Lake State Recreation Area sits on the shores of a nine-mile-long reservoir created in 1953 by the Detroit Dam on the Santiam River. Located in a forest-ringed canyon in the Cascade Mountains, the campground offers nearly 300 sites including full hookup sites, standard sites, tent sites, ADA-accessible options, and mini rustic cabins. The 400-foot-deep lake is a popular destination for anglers targeting rainbow trout, brown trout, catfish, kokanee, and chinook salmon. Boaters enjoy the expansive waters with boat ramps available at the G Loop, though ramp accessibility varies seasonally with lake levels. The campground is divided into multiple loops including the F and G loops, with sites accommodating RVs up to 60 feet. Full hookup sites include water and electric connections. A fishing dock is located near the F Loop for shoreline anglers. Paved paths wind through the campground suitable for walking and running. Views of snow-capped Mt. Jefferson can be seen from various points in the recreation area. The campground has flush toilets and a playground. There is no dump station at the park; the nearest facilities are in Salem and Sisters. Generators are not allowed. Lake levels fluctuate seasonally and can affect boat ramp access, particularly in fall and winter. Blue-green algae blooms can occur, most commonly between April and September. The F-Loop operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis during winter months starting November 1.

Directions

From Salem, Oregon, take OR-22 E for approximately 50 miles to Detroit. The campground is located on the north side of the highway, just past the town of Detroit.
