About
Detroit Lake State Recreation Area occupies the forested shores of a 3,500-acre reservoir formed by Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River. The nine-mile-long lake lies at about 1,500 feet elevation in the Cascade Range, surrounded by old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar. The campground is one of Oregon's largest, with 107 full-hookup sites, 68 electrical sites with water, 96 tent sites with water nearby, and six mini cabins that sleep three and include a heater, microwave, and mini fridge. Facilities include flush toilets, hot showers, and a visitor center that sells firewood, ice, drinks, and souvenirs. Recreation options abound: two courtesy boat ramps, two reservable boat moorages, a fishing dock, swimming areas, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, volleyball area, and playground. The lake supports kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and landlocked chinook. Note that no dump station exists on site; the nearest RV dump facilities are approximately 55 miles away. An Emerald Ash Borer quarantine is in effect across Oregon. Campers must purchase firewood within 10 miles of the park or use certified heat-treated wood only; transporting ash, olive, or white fringe tree materials is prohibited.
Directions
From Salem, take OR-22 east approximately 52 miles to Detroit. The park entrance is on the north side of the highway along the south shore of Detroit Lake.
