Deer Leap Campground

Closed — Campground is currently closed due to flood damage. Day use areas remain open. Normal operating season is April 1 through October 1.

About

Deer Leap Recreation Area is situated on the east bank of the Current River in Mark Twain National Forest, offering a peaceful camping experience away from the crowds. The campground features seven campsites (four singles and three doubles) nestled in a shady stand of pines along the river. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post, with most sites offering semi-private spacing due to vegetation between them. All sites are within walking distance of the river. The recreation area includes multiple access points: a concrete boat ramp suitable for small motorized and non-motorized boats, and a popular tubing launch at the end of the campground that serves as a put-in for floating the Current River. The float from Deer Leap to Doniphan takes approximately five hours. Outfitters frequently use the launch area, so expect some activity during peak floating season. The clear, cool Current River provides excellent fishing opportunities for bass and panfish. Amenities include vault toilets and drinking water faucets when operational. The maximum suggested RV length is 28 feet. Day use parking accommodates 35 vehicles with trailers. No ATVs, UTVs, or OHVs are permitted within the recreation area, and fireworks are prohibited. Dogs must be kept on a six-foot or shorter leash. The campground enforces quiet hours from 10 PM to 6 AM.

Directions

From US Highway 160 in Doniphan, take Highway Y heading north for approximately 5 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 4349. After 1 mile, there is a Y intersection: veer left for the boat ramp or right for the campground and floater access.
