Deep Creek Campground
Closed — Closed for the season. The campground typically operates mid-June through mid-October. Water, toilets, and trash service are unavailable after Labor Day.
About
Deep Creek Campground is located near Sand Lake at an elevation just over 10,000 feet in the Snowy Range area of Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. The summers are cool and autumn is brief at this high elevation, where winter comes early and stays late. The campground offers 11-12 small campsites including one pull-through site, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. During the operating season, the campground provides vault toilets and potable water, though services are limited after Labor Day when water, toilets, and trash collection cease. This is a pack-in, pack-out facility with no trash service provided. The remote location and small size typically result in light usage. Recreation opportunities abound in the surrounding area. The Rock Creek Trail and Sheep Lake Trail offer hiking access, while the Crater Lake Trail provides a short hike to a scenic alpine lake where boats must be carried to reach the water. Sand Lake, located nearby, is a 92-acre lake stocked with brook trout, rainbow trout, and Splake. The area is popular for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, and wildlife viewing. Access requires traveling 20 miles on Forest Roads 100 and 101 from the Snowy Range Highway.
Directions
From Saratoga take the Snowy Range Highway 20 miles, turn onto Forest Road 100 and continue 20 more miles to Forest Road 101. Turn onto Forest Road 101 for 10 miles to campground. From Elk Mountain take Carbon County Road 101 south to the Forest Boundary. Continue on Road 101 for approximately 10 miles to the campground.
